Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone impacted by Hurricane Harvey. The devastating flooding and storm damage in Houston, Corpus Christi, Copano Bay, Beaumont and surrounding areas along the Gulf Coast has forced thousands of people out of their homes. An estimated 30,000 individuals are in need of emergency shelter and 450,000 are believed to qualify for federal flood victim assistance.
Many organizations are already in the area working hard to save lives and help residents recover from this catastrophic storm. At Arwood Waste, we would like to encourage everyone to do what they can to support these efforts.
Because needs can change over time and there will be a long road to recover for Texans, cash donations are almost always preferred over material goods. This allows local organizations to assess needs and respond appropriately in real time. Blood supplies also run low with increased medical needs in disaster affected areas. Here are some of the organizations involved in this recovery and how you can donate directly to support their efforts.
American Red Cross
American Red Cross provides emergency relief nationwide. They have set up a fund with the express purpose of supporting people affected by Harvey. You can donate by visiting www.redcross.org/donate/hurricane-harvey or calling 1- 800-RED CROSS. You can also text HARVEY to 90999 to make a $10 donation.
Greater Houston Community Fund
Houston’s Mayor, Sylvester Turner, established the Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund though the Greater Houston Community Foundation. The fund will accept tax-deductible flood relief donations for victims affected by the recent floods. To donate, visit ghcf.org/hurricane-relief.
OneBlood and Blood Assurance
Blood collection agencies around the country are working to meet emergency blood supply needs. Eligible donors across America, especially those with type O-positive blood, are encouraged to make donation appointments as soon as possible. In the southeast, OneBlood and Blood Assurance are two of the organizations sending shipments of donated blood to the Houston area. You can make an appointment at one of these agencies or find a blood donation center in your local area.
